Welcome to this week’s 2-4-1 — a small pause to recharge, rethink, and reconnect.
Inside you’ll find two ideas I’m sitting with, four fun or fascinating discoveries, and one tiny step you can take to feel more like yourself this week.
2 INSIGHTS
1. Micro-joys work because of neuroplasticity.
According to the “Big Joy Project” just 5–10 minutes of micro-joy per day measurably increases well-being and reduces stress markers.
Why? Because the autonomic nervous system adapts through frequent, low-intensity signals of safety.
A warm drink.
A small laugh.
A peaceful moment outside.
Each one creates a brief parasympathetic activation and those activations add up.
Tiny joys aren’t trivial. They’re low-dose neurological training.
If you want some light, wholesome inspiration this week, there’s an excellent documentary featuring the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu that captures the power of joy beautifully.
2. Future-self connection is one of the strongest predictors of long-term behaviour… And most people have never heard of it!
Research from Hal Hershfield and others shows that the brain often treats our future selves like strangers. When that happens, long-term decisions feel like sacrifices:
saving money
planning ahead
exercising
eating well
writing consistently
But when you learn to see “future me” as a real, continuous extension of who you are, something shifts. Your mind naturally moves from:
discipline → to empathy
forcing → to caring
“I should do this” → to “this will help me later.”
A simple reframe can help:
“What’s one small action today that future-me will genuinely feel?”
That question is the doorway into sustainable change.
4 FUN FACTS
1. New Cooking Technique – Blooming Spices
I had never heard of this technique until recently, but it’s a game changer.
Blooming spices releases their essential oils and dramatically boosts flavour.

2. A Great Book to Check Out
The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse is a beautifully illustrated book filled with simple, heartwarming wisdom.
It opens with the mole asking the boy what he wants to be when he grows up.
The boy answers: “Kind.”
Apple TV adapted it into a short film that won the 2023 Oscar.
Highly recommend.
3. Full-Cast Audiobook Anyone?
As a huge Harry Potter fan, I was thrilled when Audible announced a full-cast edition of every book in the series.
I just finished The Philosopher’s Stone and it was incredible! Unique voices for each character, sound effects, and musical scoring.
If you’ve ever been curious to try audiobooks, this is a perfect entry point.
4. Tired of HIIT workouts?
Zone 2 training might be exactly what you’re looking for.
Slow, steady-state cardio with massive benefits for longevity, metabolic health, and overall vitality.
I first heard about it through Peter Attia’s interview with performance coach Iñigo San-Millán.
It’s long and technical — but worth every minute.
1 REFLECTION/ACTION
This week’s experiment: “Future-You Micro-Joy.”
Step 1: Pick one micro-joy.
Something tiny that gives you a small lift: a slow breath, a warm drink, stepping outside.
Step 2: Pair it with one future-you move.
A small action that tomorrow-you will actually feel.
Step 3: End the day with:
👉 “Today I showed up for Future Me by…”
Need an example?
Micro-Joy:
I took 20 seconds to step outside and breathe the cold air.
Future-You Move:
I set out tomorrow morning’s tea bag and mug so I can start my day peacefully.
Nightly Reflection:
“Today I showed up for Future Me by making my morning easier.”
Nothing heroic.
Just practical, repeatable self-leadership.
